Novena of the Assumption

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary marks the end of Mary's life on earth and the assumption of her body and soul into the glory of Heaven. The dogma of the Assumption was defined by Pope Pius the XII on November 1, 1950. To read more about this Feast Day and what it means to Catholics please follow this link. In commemmoration of this wonderful event, we begin today a novena of the Assumption.

A novena means nine days of public or private prayer for some special occasion or intention. Its origin goes back to the nine days that the disciples and Mary spent together in prayer between Ascension and Pentecost Sunday.

To make a novena means to persevere in prayer over a period of nine days in succession or nine weeks. Novenas can be made to ask for a certain favor, or simply to enhance a persons prayer life. It means fulfilling our Lord's teaching that we must continue praying and never lose confidence.

A novenas can be made to God, Our Lady, or one of the many the Saints of the Church.

Novena of the Assumption
(begins August 6-14th)

Feast Day : August 15th

O Immaculate Virgin / Mother of God and Mother of men
we believe with all the fervour of our faith
in your triumphal Assumption/ in soul and in body, into heaven
where you are acclaimed as Queen / by all the choirs of angels / and all the legions of the saints / and unite with them / to praise and bless the Lord / Who has exalted you above all other creatures / and to offer you / the outpouring of our devotion and love.

We are confident / that your eyes of mercy / will look down upon our misery and anguish our struggles and our weakness / that your lips / will smile upon our joys and victories, that you will hear/ Jesus say to you / of each of us / “Behold thy Son”
We, who call upon you as our Mother / take you for our guidance / strength and consolation in our mortal life.

In the glory where you reign / clothed with the sun / and crowned with stars / you are after Jesus/ the joy and gladness of all the angels/ and of all the saints.
From this earth we tread as pilgrims/ strengthened by our faith/ in the resurrection to come/ we look forward to join you/ who are our life/ our sweetness/ and our hope.
Draw us onward/ with your gentle voice/ that one day/ after this our exile/ you may show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb/ O Clement /O loving/O sweet Virgin Mary.
Amen.
You are blessed/ Virgin Mary/ by the Lord God most high/ above all women upon earth.
Draw us after you, Holy Mother.
Rejoice/ Virgin Mary/ for you alone have destroyed/ all heresies in the whole world.
Holy Mary/Virgin Mother of God/ intercede for me.
*******
HAIL HOLY QUEEN Mother of Mercy
Hail our life our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry / poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs / mourning and weeping /in this vale of tears.
Turn then / O Most Gracious advocate/ thine eyes of mercy towards us.
And after this / our exile, show unto us the Blessed fruit of thy womb / Jesus.
O clement/ O loving /O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us / O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
